FAQ

Questions, answered with honesty

Straight talk about eligibility, process, privacy, and what we can—and cannot—promise.

What is the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)?

The Disability Tax Credit is a non-refundable tax credit that helps people with severe and prolonged impairments, or their supporting family members, reduce the amount of income tax they may have to pay. Eligibility is determined by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) based on medical certification and how impairments affect daily living—not by diagnosis alone.

Who might qualify for the DTC?

You (or a dependant) may qualify if a severe and prolonged impairment in physical or mental functions markedly restricts your ability to perform a basic activity of daily living, or if you meet criteria related to life-sustaining therapy, as defined by the CRA. Physical and mental health conditions can both be relevant. A qualification check helps clarify whether pursuing an application makes sense for your situation.

Do I need a doctor or nurse practitioner involved?

Yes. The medical portion of Form T2201 must be completed by a qualified practitioner. We help you prepare a clear, provider-ready narrative of functional impacts so your clinician has the context needed to complete their section accurately—without replacing their professional judgment.

How long does the CRA take to process a DTC application?

Timelines vary. Some clients hear back in a few months; others wait longer depending on CRA volume, completeness of the file, and whether additional information is requested. We help you submit a thorough application and support you if follow-up is needed.

Can I claim previous tax years (retroactive benefits)?

In some cases, if the CRA determines you were eligible in prior years, you may be able to request adjustments for eligible prior periods (subject to CRA rules and time limits). Whether retroactive years apply depends on your individual circumstances and CRA’s determination—not on our service alone.

How much does your service cost?

We do not publish fixed packages online because every situation is different. After your qualification assessment (and, if helpful, a free consult), we provide a clear quote before you commit. Payment is only discussed after that quote—and only if you choose to move forward. No pressure—just transparent next steps.

How is the DTC different from CPP-D or provincial disability?

The DTC is a federal tax credit administered by the CRA. CPP Disability is an income-replacement benefit through Service Canada for contributors who can no longer work regularly at any job. Provincial programs (often called disability assistance or PWD) are income and support programs run by each province or territory. Eligibility rules differ. We can help you understand which pathway—or combination—may fit.

Can you guarantee my application will be approved?

No. No ethical provider can guarantee CRA, Service Canada, or provincial approval. What we can do is help you present your lived experience and functional impacts clearly, completely, and respectfully—so decision-makers have the information they need.

Is my health information kept private?

We treat your personal and health information with care and share it only as needed to support your application (for example, with your consent when coordinating with a provider). Our contact and intake tools may use trusted third-party platforms (such as Jotform or Calendly). See our Privacy Policy for details.

Do you work with people across Canada?

Yes. We support clients across Canada. DTC is federal; provincial program support is available with attention to each province’s criteria. Consults are typically virtual for accessibility and convenience.

Are you affiliated with the CRA or the government?

No. Canadian Disability Specialists is an independent private practice. We are not affiliated with the Canada Revenue Agency, Service Canada, or any provincial government program.

What if I already applied and was denied?

A previous denial does not always mean you cannot reapply or pursue further options. Book a consult or complete the qualification check so we can review what happened and discuss possible next steps for your situation.
